I had my feedback from my observations today. The news is in: I am amazing at getting kids into the room and spotting chewing gum. Nailed it. I am THE perfect teacher.
So close and yet so far...
So close and yet so far...
The issues begin after I get the kids into the room. Who would have thought it? This is my downfall.
I ask for silence...and I get noise. I ask kids questions; they give me incorrect answers and I fluff around the fact that they're incorrect so as not to hurt their feelings. Whose education am I hurting? Theirs. Who am I failing? Them, myself, the world! It's over. Done for. Only, it isn't because I'm a stubborn fool who is determined to stick around and succeed...eventually!
Hey there. I am a 25-year-old NQT teacher in an English department in England; that's as specific as I'm going to be for now. I'm in my fifth week of teaching and it is not a joke; even though my life is and so am I.
To begin with, I have never heard so many unknown -to me- words in my entire life than in my time working in the English department; it's an education and one that isn't even taking place within the lessons. I genuinely feel like a lost foreigner at times all at sea. Today, I have learned the word "apropos", what a "foil" is in literature, what it means for someone to be "their contemporary", and what a cox is in rowing. It's been a day of revelations and challenges. One such challenge is trying to continue a conversation without having a clue what has just been said and with the word "cox" being thrown everywhere. So, I've decided to instead nominate myself for the role of queen of stupid questions and ask, ask, ask. They'll get to know soon enough that I am the fraud I think I am.
So, I'm feeling pretty mediocre but it's the good kind; the kind that is mediocre with a cause. I've decided to simply OWN the word mediocre and roll around in all the mediocre-ness. That is my plan. Then once I own the word mediocre I will mediocre all over the place.
Side note: 'Meady-ochre' would be a great name for an incredible Mead... set low expectations with the name and then over deliver with the gorgeous honey tastes and ochre shades. I'm back to alcohol. Standard. Night night.
